creativity of the brave

The second volume of Telegraf Magazine is about visuals of the wartime. It about new reality where creativity is the weapon against the aggressor, and every graphic work is not only a symbol, but also an instrument of resistance.

ON FEBRUARY 24, 2022, AROUND 5 AM, THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION
STARTED THE FULL-SCALE
INVASION OF UKRAINE.

The war that had started in back in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea and occupation of the part of Donbass region has spread over the entire country. Air strikes started destroying peaceful homes, civil infrastructure, museums, universities, and theaters. Up to 10 million Ukrainians were forced to leave their homes. According to the official UN estimate, Russia has killed 8321 civilians in the 13 months of the full-scale war. The real toll of victims is way higher.

Ukrainians bravely fight against the aggressor.

FIGHT FOR YOUR LIGHT

From the first days of the large-scale war, Ukrainian designers, illustrators, and artists generate an unstoppable flow of visual reflections. Precise, honest, fierce, tragic, victory-affirming, masterful posters. Ukrainian creatives produce information campaigns, countless digital and real solutions to convey the truth and spread the call for aid in world’s fight for freedom.

UKRAINIANS AREN'T AFRAID TO CALL THINGS FOR WHAT THEY ARE. UKRAINIANS PERFORM MIRACLES OF BRAVERY AND SELF-SACRIFICE. SHOW UKRAINIAN-GRADE COURAGE. UKRAINIANS BELIEVE IN VICTORY.

THEY DO WHATEVER IT TAKES FOR THE AGGRESSOR TO GET UKRAINED*.

*Verb, «to be Ukrained». When you are Russia and you invade a country and the response is humiliation on a global forum.

DESIGN

In the magazine you will find a fair share of war-related symbolism. Explosions and smoke, check-point crossings between the chapters. The paging that begins with 5:00 am on February 24th when people started waking up to the sounds of explosions throughout the whole country. Air-raid sirens, blackout measures, font that points with an arrow to the closest bomb shelter. Next to the war, you'll also find the portrayal of Ukrainian creative community.

At times, you'll find reading the magazine physically uncomfortable. War is generally uncomfortable, you know, it isn't a norm. But this war will end in our victory and just peace.

"The war has shown what a person that stopped being afraid is capable of… The second issue of Telegraf is dedicated to the reflection of creativity over the wartime; to the people that found themselves in the epicenter of history, and survived, reinvented themselves and came out stronger."

Sasha Tregub, CEO at Projector Creative & Tech Online Institute, publisher of Telegraf.Design

"Before the full-scale war, I would catch myself thinking: Do I really want to spend all my life in Kyiv, in Ukraine? And I didn’t know the answer. But now I know: I want to stay here for life. This war has made me want to be in Ukraine more than ever."

Marc Wilkins, Swiss-British filmmaker turned Kyivite.

"Creative energy is a self-defense and opposition to the enemy. You strive to create the work that will stand for certain ideas. We protect our land, our people, and culture — it's what we represent and what we fight for."

Anton Lohov, Ukrainian artist
